EXCLUSIVE FIRST LOOK: Powerful Print Ad Urging Congress Not to Cut Veterans' Benefits Running Tonight Nationwide

Dear readers of The Reno Dispatch

For your information and edification I'm giving you an exclusive first look at this ad, which is running on web and print media nationwide starting tonight.

The strongly worded missive urges Congress to leave cuts to veterans' benefits and Social Security out of any budget deal.

It was paid for by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) and developed by a consortium of 20 veterans organizations, including Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), AMVETS, Veterans for Common Sense (VCS), and The American Legion.

Please tell me what you think of the ad in the comments section below.

Thanks.

  1. Cut present military spending, not VA benefits. And for many veterans, social security is a part of their budget. Both are promises made in the past which must be upheld by adjusting expenses in the present.

The real tragedy is that such an ad or campaign is even necessary. Some things should be beyond politics. Support for veterans is one of those things. Without veterans, we would probably be speaking German or Japanese right now. Our disabled veterans deserve much more support than they are presently getting. Any cuts now would be damn near criminal. Please keep up the fight and know that a lot of us have your back.

  3. The whole scope of Veterans issues has been important to me since I was a very young woman. I have been happy to see how much coverage you've given to it, especially lately, Jamie. I'm old enough to remember clearly the esteem with which vets of WWII were held, along with the Korean Vets -- and then the deplorable treatment some gave the Vietnam Era vets. To see our very own Congress play around with the benefits these people deserve is truly dispicable to me -- let alone the fact that our current wounded vets are getting the short end of stick in so many ways. It makes me profoundly sad and ashamed. Keep reporting! This is one of the most important issues of our time.
